The hearing aids in your drawer didn’t fail because of the brand
10 reasons people with mild to moderate hearing loss are switching to open-ear — where nothing is pushed into the ear canal.

Key Points
- Over-the-counter hearing aids became legal to sell without a prescription in the US in October 2022, for adults 18 and over with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.
- Nearly every device in that category seals the ear canal with a silicone tip or dome — which is where the three most common complaints come from.
- The Flysound B02 OpenSound takes the opposite approach: the speaker sits on the outside of the ear and the canal is left open.
- It costs a fraction of a clinic-fitted pair, which averages roughly $4,600 in the US.
The television keeps getting louder. Dinner out means asking people to repeat themselves. Sometimes you miss what your grandchild said and smile anyway.
You may have tried hearing aids already. If they hurt or made your voice sound hollow, it makes sense that you stopped wearing them.
For some of those problems, the fit matters. A device that blocks the ear canal can change how your own voice sounds. Flysound B02 OpenSound takes a different approach: a soft clip outside the ear, with nothing pushed inside.
Open-ear is the new science of hearing aids — and none of it goes down the canal
For decades a hearing aid meant pushing a tip into the ear canal and sending amplified sound down it. Open-ear does the opposite: the speaker sits outside the canal opening and leaves it clear. It is the fit audiologists have long chosen for ears that cannot tolerate a seal — now engineered into a device you can buy without a prescription.
Red Dot and iF Design Award winners, 2025 — both awarded for the open-ear design. FDA registered; registration is a listing with the FDA, not an approval or endorsement.
01Nothing goes inside your ear

If hearing aid tips leave your ears sore, a different fit may help. The B02 clips onto the outside of your ear. Nothing goes into your ear canal, so there's no tip pressing against the inside.
Thirty seconds. Over-the-counter hearing aids are for perceived mild to moderate loss only.
02Your voice sounds more natural

With the canal left open, the sound of your own voice escapes instead of being trapped behind a seal. Illustration: Flysound
When a hearing aid blocks your ear, your own voice can sound hollow or too loud. Even chewing may sound louder than usual. The B02 leaves your ear canal open, letting that sound escape and helping your voice sound more natural.
03Less annoying whistling

Feedback is amplified sound leaking back into the microphone. The usual fix is to seal the ear tighter. Illustration: Flysound
A hug or a hat can sometimes make a hearing aid whistle. This happens when sound from the speaker goes back into the microphone. The B02 has built-in feedback control to help reduce that squeal, though it may still happen in some situations.
04Just pick it up and clip it on

Tiny hearing aid tips can be hard to place, especially if your hands feel stiff. The B02 has no tip to push into your ear. Clip it on, then use the included handheld remote if you prefer buttons to a phone app.
05A different fit for narrow ears

Clinicians commonly route people with these conditions toward an open fit. Illustration: Flysound
Some ear canals are too narrow for a tip to feel comfortable. The B02 sits outside the ear, so there's nothing to squeeze inside.
06Extra help keeping them secure

Losing a hearing aid is frustrating, especially when it's too small to spot. The B02 hooks over your outer ear to help it stay in place. An anti-loss cord comes in the box for extra security while you're out and about.
07Up to 12 hours on one charge

The B02 gives you up to 12 hours of use per charge. The charging case holds over 60 more hours of power, so you can recharge between uses. Battery life will vary depending on how you use it, including calls and streaming.
08TV sound straight to your ears

Turning up the TV can make it too loud for everyone else. With a compatible Bluetooth connection, the B02 can send TV sound straight to your ears. Check your TV's connection options first, since some setups may need an extra device.

10Time to try it at home

A hundred days from delivery to decide. If the pair goes back, we cover the return postage. Photo: Flysound — digitally created
You need time to find out how a hearing aid fits into your day. You have 100 days from the day they arrive. If they are not right, email hello@flysoundusa.com inside that window and a prepaid label comes to your inbox — we cover the return postage ourselves, rather than passing on the manufacturer's change-of-mind charge. Send the pair back complete (device, case, cables and papers) and you get a full refund with no restocking fee. Refunds land 5–10 business days after the parcel is checked in. Full terms here.
